Windows 7 Win7 Freezes randomly

I've been seeing this problem occur over the past month, having installed win7 2 months ago.

The PC freezes in place. No response from keyboard, mouse, or monitor (although picture is still displayed as long as pc hasn't been idle). It happens while I'm working on the pc and also while it sits idly. It may happen during startup, or 5 mins in, or 45 mins in.

I've tried a number of potential solutions. The most promising one was turning the Power Management settings to Performance and turning off any sleep / power down settings. This seemed like it worked well but then 20 mins later another freeze. I've tried cleaning the registry with a registry cleaner. I've looked through the Event Viewer to try to identify potential problems, however -- I realized I am not an expert and have little clue how to troubleshoot using the System Events.

Here is my system info below. If anyone can lend a helping hand it'd be much appreciated.

Ran the pc in safe mode -- froze after 20mins or so of idling.

Ran the pc in bios only -- froze after a couple of hours idling.

Ran the windows memtest -- froze after 16% of the memory had been tested

I'm at my wits end here everyone. I've heard that Memtest86+ boots from a CD and tests memory without having the OS boot. Is this true? I think it is my first option for testing hardware issues. Someone on another forum also suggested using FurMark 1.7.0 to test the video card as well.

Thoughts ??

If your bios are freezing I'd say it probably has to be a memory/processor problem. Try testing each stick of memory individually and see if it stops freezing with one or the other. I'm no expert though. :p

Disable all tasks in Task Scheduler especially RAC if it still has problems...

Check your administrator logs under Event Viewer. There may be a service called Wlan autoconfigure.... when it is running it's checking every 60 seconds for a better wireless connection. There is a utility I had to use to get it totally turned off .. link and info in my last blog.

System randomly freezing

periodically, at random, my system freezes.

I suspect it is Windows querying the internet via a com/ethernet port.
but it is aggravating as hell. It will unfreeze at some unspecified time after but I must sit and "Please Wait".

One would think after all these years this wouldn't be a problem anymore.

Any tips on tracking it down and possibly stopping it.

It is possibly involving Firefox.
Everything is up to date.

.

We have quite a few posts concerning this issue and I'm pretty sure that a definitive answer has yet to be found...
I'll make this thread a sticky and eventually a cure may come to light.. So if anyone else has issues the same as ruggb please post here..

One solution was found here:

The user changed network drivers and found a cure.. If I find anything else like the above I'll post..

Another user found that by changing a bad driver the freezing stopped..See below:

More Tips on freezing

If you find that your Windows Vista or Windows 7 is freezing or crashing randomly; the reasons can be many, and the solutions many too ! This will just show you the direction in which you can work on. First see if a System Restore helps make the problem go away.
Next, try the most basic :
Run your updated Anti-Virus and your Anti-Spyware/s, followed by a CCleaner, junk clean-up. Even if the scans dont throw up anything, it might be a good idea to get your HijackThis logfile analysed. See Link Removed - Invalid URL for more on this.
Next, disable your Aero, and see if its helping.
Else, try disabling the Indexing Service.
Most such Windows freezes are also caused due to Crapware installed on pre-installed OEM Vista machines. So check up which programs you don't need and uninstall them. Clean up with a Registry Cleaner to clean up residual junk registry entries. PC DeCrapifier is a nifty program which can help you identify Craplets.
Also remove from Start-ups several non-Microsoft items which you think you don't need them to start up, every time you boot.

Next, check for Error Events : Open Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Custom Views > Administrative Events. Check if any recent events show a round red exclamation mark error icon. Double click that error and a Event Properties window will pop up. See if the information helps you identify the problem.

For example, if Link Removed - Invalid URL, due to the inability of the Search Service to start, then the system tends to freeze periodically. In such a case it is best to change the Recovery Actions for this service. To do so, open Services > Windows Search > Properties > Recovery Tab. For first failure, choose Restart the service. For second and subsequent failures, choose take No Action option. Apply > OK.

If it still doesn't help you may have to consider Updating / Flashing your BIOS. Take care while doing it.Check for Link Removed - Invalid URL.Also see the Link Removed - Invalid URL. It lists the failures and the problems your machine may have faced. If all this doesn't help, then I suggest you go through the interesting and fruitful discussion on this rather long thread here at Link Removed - Invalid URL Link Removed - Invalid URL and Link Removed - Invalid URL may interest you.

My system freezes were caused by a bad mobo that could do single channel memory but not dual channel (2nd of 6 of these particular boards with this bug). I pulled one, 1GB stick, leaving me with a single 1GB stick of memory and to my amazement, Win 7 ran like a champ! Stable as a rock after this but the corruptions required that I reinstall Win 7 which is refreshingly painless.

Windows 7 Shortly freezes and comes back

So okay. During my usage of Windows Seven, I have found one very annoying problem which is freezing. It doesn't freeze for more then 2 seconds, it freezes and then it goes back to normal instantly but it gets very annoying. Because sometimes the freezing stays for like 2 seconds and the sound totally freezes up also it does a peeping sound like its stuck.... Also I have been reaching about this problem before posting here.. they are saying that it my be cpus or memory and and I know that is not my problem because I recently updated my PC with a new graphic card. Before i did that it wasn't freezing..
I updated from a radeon X800 ATI to a HD 4770 which is clearly its better and before I switched graphic cards it worked fine and now its not right now Please I really need a fix for this issue.

Are using a wireless connection? If not, run Administrative tools and go to services and turn off Wlan autoconfig

it runs ever 60 seconds BY DEFAULT all the time to search for a better connection. That drives gamers nuts because they have that 2 second pause... which is long enough to get killed.

May not be your problem.. and you may have to read my blogs to find the program I used to stop it because everytime I disabled it.. it came back on.

There is also a strong likelyhood that you have indexing turned on and the hard drive is grinding. You have to go to the properties of each drive from Computer and uncheck the indexing box

all these suggestions require a reboot... good luck

KaoruHataki,

your thread has been moved to this main one about 'freezing'. This way, we can keep all the 'freezing' threads together.
Thankyou.

Link to freezing posts

Could someone post a link to where the freeaing issues are being discussed. My win7 pc is constantly freezing. atapi seems to be the cause according to the event logs. It is telling me that "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Ide\IdePort2." Does anyone have an idea of how to solve this problem please?

Hi THanks for helping. Right now i am courrently doing that. i hope it will work. but if not i will be posting here again for more help.

so ok i did all and no good... so i did an Event viewer
and i came up with 62 errors
i tryed posting them but no good.. too long.

but here are some that i think are important...

Possible Memory Leak. Application (C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) (PID: 964) has passed a non-NULL pointer to RPC for an [out] parameter marked [allocate(all_nodes)]. [allocate(all_nodes)] parameters are always reallocated; if the original pointer contained the address of valid memory, that memory will be leaked. The call originated on the interface with UUID ({3f31c91e-2545-4b7b-9311-9529e8bffef6}), Method number (10). User Action: Contact your application vendor for an updated version of the application.

The shadow copies of volume C: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time. Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied.

i got a cople of Display is not active

Lots of this Session "Circular Kernel Context Logger" failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000035

Took out my original memory and put in new memory, machine still freezes. I'm really thinking motherboard/power supply problems. Do you know how to configure RAM settings? I'm not sure how/where and what equations are used.

I'll definitely re-check the admin logs under Event Viewer. However, the problem I've noticed is that the hard freeze doesn't give the PC any time/data to record an error. I usually see the startup error directly after the time of freeze stating the computer was improperly shutdown.

Did you disable the scheduled tasks? They come and go almost randomly as they perform diagnostics and send reports to Microsoft. I can't find a switch to filp off the Task Scheduler so I did them all individually. The old option to stop task scheduler appears to be greyed out and non-functional over here. I may just point the path to something else so the entire scheduler can't run. I've had almost ALL my tasks turned off for about a Month and it hasn't done any harm.

Oh.. do you know about the hard drive options under device manager? You may want to go to policies and uncheck some of the "speed" features and see if that makes a difference.

Win7 freezing

Hi All
I am having problems with my laptop freezing. I did a clean install rather than an upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 less than a week ago. Since then there have been 3 random freezes of my laptop. This never happened when I had Vista,it has started since I put win7 on my machine. I have gone into Event Viewer and this is the log pertaining to the freeze. The 3 random freezes produce the same log. It means nothin to me. Can any one see where the problem is. Please keep it simple as I am not very technically minded.

Many thanks

Dave
