Hello,
I've been searching for and issue like mine but I can't seem to find anything else like it. On my Asus K53SD laptop I upgraded from windows 7 that it came with to windows 8. But this issue was on windows 7 as well I thought it might've been fixed in 8 but its still here. If I try to plug in a pair of headphones once the pc is on they're not detected, I don't see them under the playback devices and the headphones have no sound whilst plugged in.
But if I plug in headphones while the laptop is off they work fine, and the audio correct switches between speakers or headphones but they're still not under the playback devices. I've tried diferent audio drivers for my laptop from asus's support/driver website but to no avail.

Solution
It seems like you're encountering an issue with your Asus laptop where headphones are not being detected when plugged in while the PC is on, but they work fine when plugged in while the laptop is off. This could be due to various reasons, including driver issues, settings configurations, or hardware problems. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Default Playback Device:
    • Right-click on the volume icon in the system tray and select "Playback Devices."
    • Ensure that the headphones are set as the default playback device when they are connected.
    []Update Audio Drivers:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Default Playback Device:
    • Right-click on the volume icon in the system tray and select "Playback Devices."
    • Ensure that the headphones are set as the default playback device when they are connected.
    []Update Audio Drivers:
    • Try updating the audio drivers to the latest version compatible with your Asus K53SD laptop. You mentioned trying different audio drivers, but ensuring they are the correct ones for your specific model is essential.
    [
    ]Device Manager Check:
    • Open Device Manager and check if there are any warning symbols next to the audio devices.
    • If there are, try updating the drivers or uninstalling and reinstalling them.
    []Disable Front Panel Jack Detection:
    • In some cases, the front panel jack detection feature can cause issues. You can try disabling it in the audio settings.
    [
    ]BIOS Update:
    • Ensure that your laptop's BIOS is up to date. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues.
    []Hardware Inspection:
    • If none of the above steps work, there could be a hardware issue with the headphone jack. You may need to consult a technician for a more in-depth inspection.
    [
    ]Windows Troubleshooter:
    • Use the built-in Windows troubleshooting tools to identify and potentially fix audio-related issues.

      Additional Note:

    • Since you mentioned the issue persisted from Windows 7 to Windows 8, it's likely not related to the operating system itself but rather a hardware or driver issue. Try these steps and see if they help resolve the headphone detection problem on your Asus laptop. If the issue persists, further investigation may be needed to pinpoint the exact cause.
