I have a custom built laptop (Compal JHL90) and currently have a dual boot of windows xp (32 bit) and windows 7 professional (64 bit). I have an Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card installed in the laptop however when I downloaded windows 7, the graphics card is detected as a standard VGA adaptor. I tried to update the driver however windows 7 tells me I already have the latest drivers. XP seems to be picking it up fine.

I have downloaded the latest drivers for windows 7 64 bit off the Nvidia website but when I install it, I get a message:

'You cannot install a 64 bit driver using a 32 bit system'. This does not seem to make sense as I have installed a 64 bit opertaing system........can anyone help?

thanks.

Solution
It seems like you are encountering an issue with installing the Nvidia driver for your Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card on your Windows 7 64-bit system. The error message you received, "You cannot install a 64 bit driver using a 32 bit system," can be misleading in this context. The error message you received is likely due to the fact that you might have accidentally downloaded the 64-bit driver meant for a 64-bit version of Windows onto your 32-bit Windows XP system. This mismatch can cause the driver installation to fail. Here is what you can do to resolve the issue:

Steps to Resolve the Issue:

Steps to Resolve the Issue:

  1. Download Correct Driver:
    • First, ensure that you have downloaded the correct driver for your Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card and the 64-bit version of Windows 7.
    []Check Windows Version:
    • Make sure you are trying to install the driver on your Windows 7 64-bit system, not on the Windows XP 32-bit system.
    [
    ]Uninstall Existing Driver:
    • Before installing the new driver, uninstall any existing graphics drivers from the Device Manager to avoid conflicts.
  2. Manual Installation:
    • If the normal driver installation fails, try manually installing the driver through the Device Manager:
      • Right-click on the Standard VGA Adapter in Device Manager.
      • Choose "Update Driver Software" and select the option to browse your computer for driver software.
      • Navigate to the location where you extracted the downloaded Nvidia driver files and let Windows install the driver.

        Note:

If you continue to face issues with the driver installation, you can try the steps mentioned above. Also, ensure that the driver you downloaded is specifically for the Nvidia 9600 GT and the 64-bit version of Windows 7. Feel free to try these steps, and if you encounter any more issues or need further assistance, please let me know!
