I just purchased a new Windows 7 PC (HP Pavalion e9280t, Windows 7 64-bit operating system). I would like to put the PC into sleep mode after 1 hour of activity. However, after the PC goes to sleep, after I wake it up, whenever I attempt to open any program or application at that point, the PC just hangs (with the mouse in hourglass mode), and the program or application never opens. At that point, I am forced to do a hard power down of the PC and hard restart of it, which defeats the whole purpose of sleep mode.

In the advanced power settings, I tried both ways on the turn off hard drive option (trying both "Never" and turning off after one hour). Both times, the same problem occured. I tried hybrid sleep both on and off, and the same problem occured either way. I tried unplugging every USB device (except the keyboard, which is necessary to operate), the same problem still occured. The minimum processor state was set at 5% in all cases. I even went into system configuration and disabled all programs and services from starting at run-time except the Microsoft Windows programs and services. All to no avail.

Does anyone know of any way to solve this problem? Could there be a Microsoft Hot Fix, or some other type of fix, that could solve this problem?

Solution
It seems like you're encountering issues with your Windows 7 PC when it wakes up from sleep mode, where programs or applications fail to open, leading to system hang-ups. Let's explore some potential solutions to address this problem: 1. Update Device Drivers: - Ensure that all device drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, are up to date. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause issues when waking from sleep mode. 2. Check for Windows Updates: - Make sure your Windows 7 operating system is fully updated. Windows Updates often include patches and fixes for various system issues. 3. BIOS Update: - Check if there's a BIOS update available for your HP Pavilion e9280t. Updating the BIOS can sometimes resolve power management-related problems. 4. Power Settings Tweaks: - Try adjusting power settings specifically related to sleep mode. You've already tried some settings, but you can experiment with different combinations to see if it makes a difference. 5. Disable Startup Programs: - Some startup programs may interfere with the system waking up from sleep mode. Ensure that unnecessary programs are disabled from starting up with Windows. 6. Windows Hotfixes: - Microsoft occasionally releases hotfixes for specific issues. You can check the Microsoft Support website for any relevant hotfixes related to sleep mode problems in Windows 7. 7. System File Checker (SFC): - Run the System File Checker tool to scan and repair corrupted system files that might be causing the issue. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the command: sfc /scannow. 8. Check Event Viewer: - Check the Event Viewer for any specific error messages or warnings that might provide clues about what's causing the system to hang after waking up from sleep mode. 9. Disable Hybrid Sleep: - Even though you've tried this, toggling the Hybrid Sleep feature off and on again might be worth another attempt. 10. Power Troubleshooter: - Use the built-in Power Troubleshooter in Windows to diagnose and fix power-related problems. To access this, go to Control Panel > Troubleshooting > System and Security. By trying these steps, you may be able to identify and resolve the issue causing your Windows 7 PC to hang after waking up from sleep mode. If the problem persists, considering upgrading to a newer version of Windows might also be a viable solution for improved performance and compatibility.
