The following is how the desktop short looks like.
An image from 'Windowsforum.com desktop shortcut'. A desktop shortcut icon labeled 'Windows Forums' on a blue background.

I seem to recall I saw a different one some time ago.
Does everyone have the same shortcut?

So, what makes mine so "generic "?

Yes, I have cleared IE cache.
No, I have not reset my IE because I don't consider this as indication of being unstable.

I have Win 7 Home Premium SP1, IE 10, and fully updated.
Same issue with my Win 8.1Pro, IE11.

Not sure maybe one of the more tech guys could furnish an answer. I will point this thread out.

Delete the shortcut then try ctrl + F5 key combo or sign out/in. Then re-create the shortcut.

Personally I don't use shortcuts, I keep my desktop icon free. Instead I create folders in my booksmark bar, then save site as bookmark...much easier.

I was wondering what the discussion about a desktop shortcut for the forum was about, then remembered that not everyone uses a browser with a speeddial function.

Problem solved.

I ended up rebuilding my icon cache.... for just one lousy shortcut.

I'm on the same line with bassfisher, I don't really like the shortcuts. I use bookmarks for Internet, and then I use the old and dumb Start button > programs... but then of course, I can be considered old and dumb - by anyone who DARES it!

Generally, I think the Forum looks good.
