Hey guys, I have a problem with my system that started around the time I switched to a Intel 520 SSD. Not sure if that is the issue, but some whacky things started around that time. Could be coincidence.

At first my system would only crash when it was not in use (3-4 am) while running things like folding at home. My other computer computer built out of spare parts can run it for weeks and still be stable on the same OS.

Lately the BSOD has become more prevalent, Microsoft reliability index below 3 for this machine.

Only 128 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 140 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

E: drive has less than 1% free space (about 0.1%). This can cause BSOD's. Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please IMMEDIATELY free up 15% on all hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. I strongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)

Problems with this device:

Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection #2 PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_10D3&SUBSYS_53328086&REV_00\000000000000000000 This device cannot start.

Please:
- download a fresh set of drivers for it from the mobo manufacturer's website
- uninstall the current drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

I wonder if there's a hardware problem with this device. Have a look at it and see if there's anything wrong with the inside of the plug (compare it to the other ethernet plug).

Also, there may be a problem with your CD/DVD drive or the controller that controls it (on the motherboard. There are many, many of these errors in the Event Viewer logs:

I'd strongly suggest updating the storage drivers on your motherboard. If that doesn't fix things, try disconnecting the CD/DVD drive to see if that helps (use anti-static precautions and ensure that the system is unplugged from the wall and that you're holding onto the metal of the case before trying this).

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I tried to remove and reinstall the Network drivers. Now it simply gives an error 31 in the devise manager.

SSD firmware is up to date. OS is installed on SSD so can't remove to troubleshoot unless I want to redo the whole system.

Holy 40,000 errors from the cd/dvd drive. pulled it...

USB 3 drivers were up to date?

I have never had this many issues with hardware config. I usually have EVGA motherboards because they address driver issues etc. I might be swapping mobos soon if this keeps up.

All clocks are factory speed with the exception of the graphics card, and that was factory "super clocked".

If you can't fix the network card w/new drivers - then I suspect that it's broken.
If it's an onboard card - disable it in the BIOS.
If it's an add-on card - remove it from the system.

USB 3.0 drivers date from 2010. Those are known to have BSOD issues, so please update them.

I guess I didn't update the USB drivers when I thought I did. Drivers are now 2011.

Any suggestions on troubleshooting the cdr drive? It's a LG dvr/w blah blah.

Regarding Intel(R) 82574L Gigabit Network Connection #2- I remember having issues with it and it causing stability issues. Is there a place other than devise manager I would have disabled it? It's an onboard network port (now disabled in bios). I did have another crash while I was away. After I clean up some of the above issues maybe we can revisit with fewer problems to deal with at one time. lol.

The Mobo bios, and all the stuff from intel is up to date according to the intel site (they are terrible at telling you if anything isn't updated), But how exactly do I check for storage drivers? (example intel's tool didn't find the usb 3 update. I got lucky and found it in a manual search)

There have been instances of problems with the Marvell controllers and SSD drives. I'd suggest:
1) Making sure that the SSD is connected to a controller other than the Marvell
2) Updating the Marvell controller (as there have been instances of issues with the controller even though an SSD wasn't connected to it)

Ok, so I updated the USB 3 drivers, disconnected the DVDRW, and all the above steps and my windows reliability index is up to 5 with and it looks like it will hit 10 by wednesday. (I don't remember the last time my system crunched numbers for 2 days in a row without an error). So it seems the USB drivers / and the lan port were pissing off my system. I disabled the 2nd lan port in bios and in the devise manager. I will wait to get the dvd drive back in since I never use it. But so far I have had 2 days without issue.

I guess when I reinstalled the system with the SSD the drivers I had were crap for the SSD. Boot time is somewhere in the 30 second range, I think it could be faster but I am going to catch up on work and then mess with that later. Things are looking up. I am going to use this as an opportunity to do a full backup my system since everything is working properly. Thanks for the help. We will revisit the DVD drive next week when I have some free time. If your ever in Portland let me know and I will buy you a beer.
