Windows 7 BSODs, out of ideas

Hello,
I've been having some frequent BSODs for the past couple of months. They usually happen when I play games but I've had them happen at other times too. A few things I've done:

Reformatted and disabled fast user switching as someone once suggested to me.

I tried about 3 other video cards because I initially thought it was my ATI Radeon video card since the BSODs were always mentioning atikmdag.sys. I tried another ATI card and it also gave me BSODs. I borrowed an NVIDIA card but wasn't able to test it for long, only about a day and nothing happened so I switched to NVIDIA. I've since had much less BSODs than I did with ATI but they still occur occasionally. I also started getting TDR errors sometimes during gameplay and sometimes randomly. It always mentions the kernel mode driver.

I updated all my drivers, uninstalled them, reinstalled them, and tried older ones and nothing helped.

Enabled driver verifier and that blamed a USB driver or something but I don't have anything connected to USB other than my mouse, keyboard and printer.

I ran memtest and got no errors. Prime95 didn't have errors. Nothing happened with Furmark. When I tried the OCCT GPU test, I got a TDR error as soon as the test started. I also tried running Video memory stress test and it gave a bunch of errors.

I'm not overclocking so everything in the BIOS is left as it is. I tried changing the memory timings and voltages but that didn't help either.

Here are the pictures from CPU-Z. I changed the memory voltage to 1.6 in the BIOS though so I don't know if what's in the picture is accurate.

I've checked out other articles and posts and really have no idea what else it could be. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1. The RAM settings look right. If you have other sticks in slots 2, 3, and 4, attach their SPD screenshots too.

Try a different driver. User the driver sweeper after you uninstall the current nVidia driver:

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers

Let's do some hardware tests:

3. Run FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
Watch for artifacts and do not let the card overheat.

4. Run Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
10 passes overnight

5. Last but not the least, no overclocking of any hardware parts.

As I said in my original post, I ran both FurMark and Memtest and didn't get any problems or errors. I also did try other versions of the drivers and used Driver Sweeper and I still get BSODs and TDR errors.

You may want to try out for BSOD's with the NVIDIA card disabled.

I would run the tests again, and if no errors pop up nor reinstalling the driver does the trick - consider bios upgrade. If new bios doesn't help either, it is a hardware issue for sure.

I updated the BIOS and also ran the tests again and got no errors. But I got another BSOD earlier, a SYSTEM SERVICE EXCEPTION 0x3b.

How would I disable the NVIDIA card? My motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics.

How would I disable the NVIDIA card? My motherboard doesn't have onboard graphics.

Go to Control Panel > (System) > Device manager > right click on the video card > disable. Reboot.

You'll have to do without any 3D graphics for the period of time that your card is disabled. If the system does not crash while the card is disabled, that means your video card is indeed faulty.

I disabled the video card in device manager and I got a BSOD earlier while I was on YouTube, another system service exception. I guess it isn't the video card then?

1. Attach your latest crash dump
2. Upgrade bios to the latest
3. Enter bios setup and load setup defaults
4. Reformat and reinstall one last time. Do a vanilla install just to test without any drivers or software. If it crashes on a freshly installed system - blame hardware for sure. So far your dmp's have been citing your video card driver as the causer:

Also, there might be an issue with the power supply. See if it gives you enough juice.

Here are the latest files. I also upgraded and loaded the setup defaults in BIOS. I'll be doing a fresh install of Windows later when I get home and post an update of what happens. I'm going to try a different install on a different hard drive if that's ok, since I have 2 different Windows discs. Also, how can I check the power supply?

I would still suspect RAM, or RAM slot being bad. The sticks are matching and you say you have run the memtest 10 passes overnight without a single error. Worth testing per slot and per stick.

I'll be doing a fresh install of Windows later when I get home and post an update of what happens.

Yes, would be good. Do not install any software or drivers, if it's a hardware issue it'll pop up soon.

Also, how can I check the power supply?

1. Does it have enough Watt for your hardware? PSU is generally considered insufficient if the system crashes under peak pload.

2. Try a different one.

3. Power Supply Test - How Do I Test the Power Supply in My Computer? - PSU Test

Another problem I see on page 1 is your video card:

When I tried the OCCT GPU test, I got a TDR error as soon as the test started.

BugCheck D1, {0, 8, 0, fffff88011f4044c}

*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for nvlddmkm.sys
*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for nvlddmkm.sys
Probably caused by : hardware ( nvlddmkm+b644c )

So I'd suspect:

1. The video card - if drivers don't fix, I'd try a different card, or without it at all.
2. RAM
3. PSU

1. Does it have enough Watt for your hardware? PSU is generally considered insufficient if the system crashes under peak pload.

2. Try a different one.

3. Power Supply Test - How Do I Test the Power Supply in My Computer? - PSU Test

Yes I think it does, it's an OCZ ModXStream 600W PSU. I don't have any other PSUs and I don't have a multimeter or power supply tester to test at the moment.

About the video card, I mentioned in my original post that I tried 3 different cards, 2 ATI and one NVIDIA before switching to my current NVIDIA one. Both ATI cards gave me BSODs and I wasn't able to test the NVIDIA one long enough to say for sure. With my current card, the BSODs are much less frequent than the ATI cards, but it's also giving me TDR errors. For each card I did try different drivers and used driver sweeper. And of course after I disabled the card last night I still got a BSOD. Is it likely that every card was faulty? I had started to think that maybe it was a problem with my motherboard..not sure if that's a possibility.

I will try memtest again and see how that goes, and I'll try a new install of Windows later and post what happens. Thanks a lot for all your help so far.

All I can is guess, tdr errors (116, 117) are caused by faulty video cards or by bad drivers. Of course bad PCIeX slot can give you tdr errors too.

You can't programmatically test PSU and motherboard, you test them by replacing.

I ran memtest again for each stick separately and it passed. I also tried running a new install of Windows on a different hard drive. So far there aren't any problems but I haven't really done anything since I didn't install any software. I'll try it out some more and post what happens.

Well I ran the OCCT GPU test again twice and it mysteriously worked and I didn't have any problems with it.

But I did notice some new problems before ever since I connected the second hard drive with the other install of Windows 7 on it. When I used the original hard drive (the one without the fresh install), I started getting a lot more TDR errors. And yesterday when I was converting videos, it kept saying Windows Explorer stopped responding. This happened about 5 or 6 times. I haven't played any games lately so I haven't gotten any more BSODs and with the other hard drive I wasn't able to get any problems either.

I ran the HDDScan and it had an error icon next to UltraDMA CRC Errors. I'm not sure this is a hard drive problem. I did have a different hard drive before and I changed it. I was having the BSODs with both. I attached the log from the scan.

I doubt that UltraDMA CRC is the culprit, about every other hard drive has this error.

(Unless SMART reported it in read color).

About the video card, I mentioned in my original post that I tried 3 different cards, 2 ATI and one NVIDIA before switching to my current NVIDIA one. Both ATI cards gave me BSODs and I wasn't able to test the NVIDIA one long enough to say for sure.

I suggest to remove the card and to try out your PC without a videocard at all. It may not be fun doing so and will sure take time, but this way you'll know if your BSOD's were all about the videocard. Of course if possible, if you have any onboard VGA.
