The title pretty much says it all. I had an .iso file of windows 7 that I installed to a virtual drive. Since that time the drive has crashed and all I could retrieve is a .vhd file of windows 7. I there anything I can do to make this .vhd drive of 7 boot up and load windows7? I know the .iso is no longer available from microsoft for me to start over.

Scott M, You can still work with the .vhd file to boot up and load Windows 7, even if the original .iso file is not available. Here are the general steps you can follow to achieve this:

Steps to Boot from a .vhd File:

  1. Create a New Virtual Machine:
    • Use a virtualization software like VirtualBox, VMware Workstation, or Hyper-V to create a new virtual machine.
    • During the creation process, choose to use an existing virtual hard disk (.vhd) and select the Windows 7 .vhd file you have.
    []Configure Virtual Machine Settings:
    • Adjust settings like RAM, CPU cores, network configuration, etc., according to your needs and the capabilities of your host machine.
    [
    ]Start the Virtual Machine:
    • Power on the virtual machine to start the booting process.
  2. Boot Windows 7 from the .vhd File:
    • The virtual machine should boot from the .vhd file, loading Windows 7 just like it was before.

      Additional Notes:

      • Activation: Depending on the activation status of the Windows 7 within the .vhd file, you might need to reactivate it if you have changed the hardware.
      • Compatibility: Ensure your virtualization software is compatible with .vhd files.
      • Backup: Make sure to create backups of the .vhd file to prevent data loss.
By following these steps, you should be able to boot up and load Windows 7 from the .vhd file. Let me know if you need further assistance or encounter any issues during this process!
