Windows 7 Unable to get Full Resolution

After upgrading my Compaq Presario SR5139UK with GeForce 8400GS and a generic 19" LCD monitor from Vista to W7 I am unable get the full resolution on the monitor. In control panel the monitor is shown as a 17" and gives no option to select a 19". The max resolution that I can get is 1152 * 764 rather than the previous 1440 * 900 under Vista. I have updated the NVIDIA driver to 191.07 but with no success. Any ideas please?

I did that but it re-installed the duff NVIDIA driver. I guess that I need to delete the NVIDIA driver files?

I don't think it's a good idea to just go around deleting files. You can really screw your computer up.

Maybe I can explain this a little better................

I just replaced my video card (a Nvidia Geforce 8500) in another machine.

Windows recognized it right away and now the driver states Nvidia Geforce 8500 (Microsoft Corporation -WDDM v1.1

So it actually removed my Nvidia drivers that I had downloaded from Nvidia's site and used the Microsoft WDDM driver
